Derived from the author's commissioned history of OR in the UK, this presentation highlights the interrelationships between the development of OR in the UK and the US in the period to 1970. In focusing on the area bombing campaigns in WWII, we compare and contrast the wartime origins of OR in both countries with particular reference to the strategic capabilities of the USAAF and RAF Bomber Command. This serves as a precursor to analysis of the peacetime diffusion of OR, focusing on educational and methodological developments and the take-up of OR in the corporate and public sectors. In thse respects, there were major points of contrast between the 2 countries which can only be explained satisfactorily by reference to socio-economic developments reaching back into the 19th century.
