The 2004 INFORMS Combined Colloquia will be held October 22-23, the Friday and Saturday immediately preceding the INFORMS Annual Meeting, in Denver. This year, it will feature the:

The Combined Colloquium has been designed to maximize the interaction between all participants as well as to address issues relevant to the attendees of the individual colloquium. All three colloquia are sponsored by INFORM-ED, the Education Forum of INFORMS and the INFORMS Education Committee.

The Combined Colloquia will commence on Friday with a dinner for all participants during which INFORMS President Michael Rothkopf will address participants on the future of INFORMS and its position at the center of teaching, research, and practice. In addition, combined breaks and meals will be provided and participants will have opportunities to interact with each other and with Friday's speakers.

Because of increased demand and limited capacity, participation in the colloquia is by nomination only. Note that 2004 Annual Meeting Denver registration is not included for Colloquia participants. Colloquia participants must also register for the INFORMS Annual Meeting.

This year's Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium will address several aspects of incorporating and assessing effective teaching techniques in any undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The colloquium will be beneficial to both seasoned and new faculty members at all levels and in all disciplines of OR. Planned sessions include topics such as:

  • Principles of Effective Teaching
  • Assessing Student Learning
  • Incorporating Active Learning

While they are separate colloquia, both the Future Academician Colloquium and the Future Practitioner Colloquium have been organized with current doctoral students and newly graduated academicians and practitioners in mind. The academician colloquium features panel discussions on a range of pertinent topics regarding how to effectively balance the various roles of a professor including publishing, advising, proposal writing, and professional development. The practitioner colloquium features sessions focusing on experiences of young practitioners such as building a research networking, enhancing one's technical skill set, and meeting expectations of managers.
