How do I enter the contest?

You may enter the INFORMS Video/Photo Contest by uploading them at  By entering the contest you agree to be bound by the contest restrictions posted below.

  1. Video entries must be submitted in avi, mov, mpg or mp4 format.  In the entry form include your name, address, zip code, daytime telephone number, e-mail address, a brief synopsis of your entry including date/length of video - which can be no longer than 5 minutes in length -  and first names only of people recorded in video.
  2. Photo entries must be submitted in JPEG format, with a resolution of 150dpi or higher. In the entry form include your name, address, zip code, daytime telephone number, email address, and brief synopsis of your photo including first names only of subjects and venue the photos came from such as:
    • Registration, 
    • Vendor Workshops,
    • Membership Meeting,
    • Coffee Breaks,
    • Exhibits,
    • Job Fair,
    • Lunch Break,
    • Business Meeting,
    • Welcome Reception,
    • Desert Reception,
    • General Reception.

What type of videos or photographs should I enter?

Participants will create a video/photo of their experiences at the 2009 INFORMS Annual Meeting.  Be innovative and record fun, cool and informative videos/photos. Show us INFORMS through your eyes.

  1. You can record/shoot interesting demos or partner product demonstrations at the exhibit hall.
  2. You can interview your friends, colleagues or vendors and capture their views about INFORMS or O.R.
  3. You can record or shoot social activities such as at the coffee breaks, lunch, Welcome Reception, and General Reception
  4. Do not record any speaker from any session including plenaries and keynotes.
  5. Do not interview members of the press or stock analysts.

Two (2) Grand Prizes will be awarded, one for the video category, one for the photo category:  the Flip Video Mino Series. Winners will be determined on or about October 19, 2009. Winners will be notified by email.

How will the videos/photos be judged?

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: video: creative concept (25%), technical ability (25%), sound (25%), dialogue (25%), photo: creative concept (50%) and technical ability (50%). In the event of a tie, the entries involved will be re-judged by an additional judge who will serve as a tiebreaker and who will evaluate entries according to criteria listed above. All video and photo entries must be the original creation of the entrant.

Where will the photos or videos be posted?

Winning photos and video will be posted on this site.

How long can the videos be?

Video entries must be no longer than five minutes long and have a title.

When does the contest begin and end?

Contest begins October 9, 2009 and ends October 16, 2009, 6:00 pm PST.

Will the contest winners be publicized? 

Names of winners will be posted on this siteafter October 20, 2009 and will appear in INFORMS eNews.

Contest Restrictions

All entries become the property of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and will not be returned.  INFORMS may use entered videos or photos for future promotional purposes

The video/photo must not have been previously submitted, distributed, aired or have won any other award in any other competition. All entrants will be required to sign an affidavit verifying the originality of the video and compliance with contest rules. Entry cannot defame or invade the rights or privacy of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any third party personal or proprietary rights. Entry must be in keeping with INFORMS’ image and may not be offensive, as determined by judges in their sole discretion.

Judging will be conducted under the supervision of INFORMS Marketing Department, whose decisions are final and binding on matters relating to this contest. Judges reserve the right not to award the Grand Prize if it determines that no entry is qualified. Winners will be notified by phone, mail or email.

Contest open to attendees of the 2009 INFORMS Annual Meeting held in San Diego, California. Employees, and their immediate families and household members, of INFORMS are not eligible. Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Entrants who have been employed as professional videographers are ineligible. Entries received prior to or after Entry Period are void. By accepting the prize, winners consent to the use of their name, video/photo entry, biographical information, photographs and or likenesses for advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation (except where prohibited) by INFORMS.

INFORMS reserves the right to modify video or video titles and publish or advertise the video without approval, acknowledgement or compensation unless prohibited by law. By entering, entrants agree to defend, release and hold harmless INFORMS and their agents from and against any claims, action and/or liability for injury, loss or damage of any kind resulting from participating in this promotion (including in connection with the use and/or exploitation of the submitted video/photo) or from the acceptance or use of prize awarded.  U.S. law governs these contest rules.

Neither INFORMS, their affiliates, subsidiaries, divisions, advertising and promotion agencies, (collectively “Releasees”), or for any human or other error, technical malfunctions, lost/delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, line failures of any telephone network, computer equipment, software, inability to access any online service or web site, or any other error or malfunction, or any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation in this Contest, or for any injury to person or property, including but not limited to video/photo equipment, arising from the entrant’s participation in this Contest or for the use or misuse of any prize won.  Releasees are not responsible for lost, late, illegible or misdirected entries or mail.

Caution: Any attempt by an entrant or any other individual to deliberately damage any online service or web site, tamper with the judging process, or otherwise undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, INFORMS reserves the right to seek damages and/or other remedies from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. If for any reason the Contest is not capable of being executed as planned, or infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, action of entrants, technical failures or any other causes beyond the control of INFORMS, corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, INFORMS reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any suspect entry or entrant and to  cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest and/or award the prizes from among all eligible, non-suspect entries received as of the date of the termination, as INFORMS determines in its sole discretion. Entries not complying with all rules are subject to disqualification. No correspondence regarding entries will be entered into with entrants other than the potential Grand Prize winner. By entering, each entrant licenses all rights to the content of his/her entry and the ideas/concepts embodied therein. INFORMS shall have the right to modify, use, assign or dispose of such entries however they see fit without approval of entrants or any third party. Entrants grant INFORMS the right to use their names, images, likenesses, photographs, voices and biographical materials, and video submissions, for advertising, publicity and promotion purposes including posting the videos, photos or screen names online for any purpose or on a winner’s list and other online announcements, and for sharing the videos and photos with the media for viewing, whether TV, web or print, without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law. Neither entrants nor winner shall receive any compensation or credit for use of entries, other than that disclosed in these rules.
