Opening Morning Keynote: To Get Big, Start Small and be Comfortable with Fast Failure and Learning
Mr. Bill Schamrzo, the conference-opening keynote speaker, gave a powerful talk that, in my opinion, epitomized this conference. Mr. Schmarzo’s insight into analytics was extremely enthusiastic and his energy was contagious. Who needs coffee with an opening speaker like this?! Mr. Schamrzo provided insights into framing business conversations to drive customer insights (the small) based upon keeping data (the big) analysis simple and evolving the business’ analytical maturity. He also touched upon using software version control concepts within these business insights, a concept which resonates with the “agile” data science & software developer in me. Furthermore, to maximize the impact of data analytics, one must be comfortable with failing fast and learning fast as they are inherent to the discipline. He mentioned his experience going to Yahoo! where he had to unlearn everything that he thought he knew about Data Analytics. He also encouraged us to use processes designed around this to achieve digital transformation and embrace disruption.
