Model-Based Optimization, Plain and Simple:
From Formulation to Deployment with AMPL

Optimization is the most widely adopted technology of Prescriptive Analytics, but also the most challenging to implement:

  • How can you prototype an optimization application fast enough to get results before the problem owner loses interest?
  • How can you integrate optimization into your enterprise’s decision-making systems?
  • How can you deploy optimization models to support analysis and action throughout your organization?

In this presentation, we show how AMPL gets you going without elaborate training, extra programmers, or premature commitments. We start by introducing model-based optimization, the key approach to streamlining the optimization modeling cycle and building successful applications today. Then we demonstrate how AMPL’s design of a language and system for model-based optimization is able to offer exceptional power of expression while maintaining ease of use.

The remainder of the presentation takes a single example through successive stages of the optimization modeling lifecycle:

  • Prototyping in an interactive command environment.
  • Integration via AMPL scripts and through APIs to all popular programming languages.
  • Deployment with QuanDec, which turns an AMPL model into an interactive, collaborative decision-making tool.

Our example is simple enough for participants to follow its development through the course of this short workshop, yet rich enough to serve as a foundation for appreciating model-based optimization in practice.

Within the Data Science Experience platform, IBM provides to Data Scientists and Data Science Leaders:

  • the ability to combine optimization techniques with other analytics technologies such as statistics and machine learning in an unified environment. For example: Decision Optimization models can ingest forecasts generated by Machine learning models, and automatically recommend which actions to take;
  • the ability to deploy their models in minutes, creating micro-services that can be immediately integrated into applications or more complex services;
  • the ability to boost their productivity using visual dashboards that help validate the optimization models . They can explore trade-offs between different action plans in a single view using features that enable What-If scenario comparisons.

We will showcase this technology and demonstrate its ease of use.

Version 12.8 of IBM CPLEX Optimization Studio is available to customers, teachers and students since December 2017. Among other features, it offers a new callback framework in CPLEX, the Generic Callback.

The CPLEX Generic Callback was designed from the ground up with a significant goal in mind: providing a simple framework that keeps all CPLEX performance. By making sure that callbacks don’t introduce any change in the solution path, the Generic Callback allows users to monitor CPLEX behavior without interfering with it, and to drive CPLEX without incurring any undue cost. By not disabling Dynamic Search or any other feature, performance improves by 25% on difficult models.

We will introduce this new features, and some of the other improvements that went into CPLEX Optimization Studio 12.8, such as performance improvements in Constraint Programming, MIP and other algorithms, new platforms for OPL and the IDE (including MacOS) and gap display while solving CP models.

The Python library pandas ( is popular with data scientists, who use it to carry out an entire data analysis workflow in Python. When building analytics models, we often work with data in tables that are sourced from databases, CSV files, and spreadsheets. pandas provides a uniform environment for working with data tables with a large number of methods for manipulating tabular data, many of which are directly applicable for building large scale optimization models. In this workshop, Irv Lustig will present an introduction to pandas and illustrate some of its powerful features that can accelerate optimization model development and deployment.

Social media generates huge amounts of data every day and most of the data is unstructured. This is a untapped resource that may provide significant benefits to companies able to exploit this data. SAS Visual Analytics is a big data tool that facilitates the visualization of large data sets. In this talk we demonstrate how insight can be derived from the analysis of Donald Trump’s tweets. First, a word cloud is built and then a sentiment analysis is done on all of his tweets. Tweets are grouped into topics and the sentiment surrounding each topic is analyzed. This leads to the discovery of novel and interesting insights.
