The Benefits of Lean Cell Design on Business Processes

Lean Six Sigma methodology has been making its way into conversations across manufacturing and industrial giants for years. A way to streamline processes and eliminate waste, Lean Six Sigma concepts allow us to combine data analysis with effective implementation to build lasting change into production.

But what about people? This talk will cover a case study about executing sustainable change in a human-focused process using Lean Six Sigma and data analytics, with a touch of psychology.

Sun Life Financial’s “Plan Change” team processes changes to enforce insurance policies. The team had been struggling with elongated cycle times and an ever-growing backlog of requests. In 2018, the Best Practices team initiated a Lean Six Sigma improvement project to identify root causes and implement new structure. Based on the data findings, we set up a “work cell” – a concept borrowed from lean manufacturing – that brought four teams together for 6 weeks to identify improvement opportunities and track data.
