Cybersecurity Risk Spectrum

Wednesday, April 14, 11-11:40am EDT

Do all cybersecurity risks create vulnerabilities at company domains equally? What if, cybersecurity risks create more vulnerabilities at one company’s reputation than its financial performance? Which company domains are perceived to be more vulnerable to cybersecurity risks and what are the differences among these vulnerabilities? Would the extent of domains perceived to be more vulnerable to cybersecurity risks in any company impact the probability of a cybersecurity risk occurrence? These are critical questions today where we face increased cyberattacks on companies. However, the current stage of the research in information security literature is limited to acknowledge the perceived effect of these cybersecurity risks on company domains and how this perception would make them more vulnerable or resistant to cybersecurity risks. In this research, our attempt is to answer these questions with the aid of NLP techniques and tools on SP500 data for the last 10 years. In the end, we develop a validated measure for cybersecurity risk, “cybersecurity risk spectrum” that corresponds to the extent of perceived vulnerable domains to the cybersecurity risks at companies.

I am a PhD student in Information Systems at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I am working under the supervision of Professor Ravichandran, the co-author of this paper. During my Ph.D. studies, I also worked as a research extern at IBM’s Causal Knowledge Extraction Research and also as a research assistant at IBM’s Graph Convolutional Network for Climate and Credit Risk prediction research. My research interests include cybersecurity risk perception of companies, and also digitization and transformation.

The co-author of this paper, Professor Ravichandran, is the Associate Dean for Research, and the Irene and Robert Bozzone’55 Distinguished Chair and Professor in the Lally School of Management & Technology, RPI. He is also the Academic Director for the MS in Supply Chain Management program and the Faculty Director for the Center for Supply Networks and Analytics. He is an affiliated faculty in the Information Technology program in the School of Science and in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at RPI.
