Earlier this year, INFORMS launched a new advocacy initiative to raise policymakers’ awareness and interest in the O.R. and analytics fields, build strategic relationships between INFORMS and the Washington, DC policy community, and enable INFORMS to become a trusted source of expertise.
On Monday morning, Jeff Cohen, Director of Marketing and Public Affairs for INFORMS was joined by Charles Cooper, Executive Vice president of Signal Group, a government relations and communications firm that INFORMS is partnering with for its advocacy efforts.
The session provided background on the current goals of the INFORMS advocacy program, what has been accomplished so far, as well as a look to the future.
The advocacy goals consist of the following:
- Simplify the value proposition for O.R. and analytics for the government consumer;
- Educate well-positioned policymakers on the value of O.R. and analytics;
- Create champions for O.R. and analytics on Capitol Hill, the White House, and within key federal agencies;
- Increase adoption of O.R. and analytics within the federal government; and
- Position INFORMS and its members as a policy resource to key policymakers.
In addition, Cohen and Cooper shared an Advocacy Input-Output Model that illustrated how INFORMS programs, events, publications, and other efforts are being leveraged for educational and engagement opportunities, including the INFORMS 2018 Government & Analytics Summit held earlier this year in Washington, DC.
The session also included a discussion about the overall current state of Washington, including the role of social media; an analysis of the 2018 midterm election polls and predictions; and the practical impacts and implications of different election day outcomes, in particular, the impact it will have on INFORMS’ advocacy efforts in 2019 and beyond.
Both Cooper and Cohen shared that the most important factors in communicating the importance of O.R. and analytics for policymakers are the voices and stories of our INFORMS members.
