Microvolunteering Fun
This year, INFORMS (and Pro Bono Analytics) are partnering with FareStart, a Seattle nonprofit helping the homeless learn the skills necessary to find employment in the restaurant and food service sectors. Yesterday (Sunday), conference attendees helped create “hygiene kits” for FareStart to distribute. Today and for the remainder of the meeting (“while supplies last”, as they say in the informercials), we are assembling “no sew” blankets for FareStart to pass out. All that is involved is tying a few knots, which is actually surprisingly relaxing (unless you’re a mathematician specializing in knot theory, in which case it probably seems like work). If you’d like to take a break from the brain-strain of all the technical sessions, stop by our tables (in the exhibit hall, directly left of the main INFORMS booth as you enter)! There’s no cost (although you are certainly welcome to donate) … and, for those of you working in more theoretical areas, we’ll be happy to demonstrate how to tie a knot. 😉
