43rd Annual Conference

Welcome to the 43rd annual meeting of the EURO Working Group on Operational Research Applied to Health Services. The ORAHS 2017 Conference will take place in the beautiful city of Bath, UK from 30th July to 4th August 2017. It is organised by the Centre for Healthcare Innovation & Improvement of the prestigious University of Bath School of Management.

EURO is the ‘Association of European Operational Research Societies’ within IFORS, the ‘International Federation of Operational Research Societies’. Its aim is to promote Operational Research throughout Europe. ORAHS was formed in 1975 and is essentially a network of persons involved in the application of systematic, quantitative analysis in support of planning and management in the health services sector. The group has at present 242 members from more than 30 countries, mainly in Europe but also from overseas (USA, Canada, Brazil and other countries).

The academic programme of ORAHS 2017, which will take place on the beautiful University of Bath campus will include oral presentations, poster presentations, plenary sessions and special sessions for health care professionals, consultants and policy makers. The social programme will be equally entertaining taking full advantage of the City of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the surrounding area including the picturesque Cotswolds, the prehistoric monument of Stonehenge and others.

The organisers of INFORMS Healthcare 2017 and ORAHS 2017 have ensured that those who want to attend both conferences can do so with ease. The Rotterdam conference ends on Friday 28th July and the Bath conference starts two days later, on Sunday 30th July.

  1. The local INFORMS crew will organize several sightseeing day trips on Saturday 29, some of which will drop you off at Schiphol Airport by the end of the afternoon. Well in time to reach London or Bath the same day as:
    • There are direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Bristol daily (flight time less than an hour and a half), after which Bath is about 50 minutes by taxi, bus or a combination of bus and train.
    • There are numerous direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to London airports every day (flight time  1 hour). From London, Bath can be reached by train from London in one and half hours. To get to the train it is most convenient to fly to London City Airport
  2. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport can be reached also by direct train from Rotterdam Central Station, which is 2 minutes to walk from the Conference Venue and main conference hotels, and 30 minutes by train. For flight options see above.
  3. There are also direct flights to London from Rotterdam/The Hague Airport, which is a 10 minute bus ride from Rotterdam Central Station.
  4. High Speed trains from Rotterdam to Brussels run every hour. From Brussels there are regular direct flights to London. (Brussels is also worth a visit!). For train information see https://www.nsinternational.nl/en.
  5. Travel from Rotterdam to Bath by car using the Eurotunnel from Calais takes about six and a half hours. Remember to switch lanes upon entering the UK.
